Schutzhund is a sport for dog and handler which focuses on 3 phases including Obedience, Tracking and Protection. The sport is fun and challenging for both dog and handler offering a healthy stimulus for the dog while teaching the handler to better understand their individual dog resulting in an enhanced bond between the two.
The Schutzhund dog is the ideal family dog, acting as a loyal companion and protector. Through training, the dog and owner will enjoy an understanding, forgiving and loving life together.
Part of the pleasure of Schutzhund is the opportunity to share your progress with others who have a similar interest in dogs. Competitive trials are held whose foundations are similar to that of Police Search & Rescue dogs. The dog and handler work as a team and are awarded points in all three phases of the sport. The team with the highest points scored wins.
Schutzhund originated in Germany around 1900. max Von Stephanitz founded ‘SV’, the German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany to evaluate structure and workability of the German Shepherd dog in all three areas of the sport.
